Skiagrafies IV (2021)

for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano

“Skiagrafies” (shadow etchings in Greek) is a cycle of works that approach sound through the perspective of shadows. It consists of four autonomous works: “Skiagrafies I” (for Partch instruments and saxophone quartet), “Skiagrafies II” (for flute and piano amplification), “Skiagrafies III” (for wind ensemble), and “Skiagrafies IV” (for chamber ensemble).

All four works approach the concept of shadows through two principal angles: the exploration of particularly minute gradations of sounds, and the reflections and retraction of the sa musical object in continuously evolving environments.

“Skiagrafies IV” adds a psychological dimension to the concert of shadows. The work traces its origin to a quotation of Odysseus in Sohpocles’ “Ajax”: “I see that us the living are nothing but ghosts, hollow shadows.” In “Skiagrafies IV” an otherworldly, repeating sound signal becomes the connective tissue around which an array of subconscious memories gradually unfold.

Skiagrafies IV was commissioned for and premiered by the ERGON ensemble on April 14, 2021 at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall, Greece.

Οι “Σκιαγραφίες” είναι ένας κύκλος έργων που προσεγγίζουν τον ήχο μέσω του πρίσματος των σκιών. Απαρτίζεται από τέσσερα αυτόνομα έργα: “Σκιαγραφίες Ι” (για όργανα Partch και κουαρτέτο σαξοφώνων), “Σκιαγραφίες ΙΙ” (για φλάουτο και αντήχηση πιάνου), “Σκιαγραφίες ΙΙΙ” (για ορχήστρα πνευστών) και “Σκιαγραφίες ΙV” (για σύνολο μουσικής δωματίου).

Και τα τέσσερα έργα προσσεγίζουν την έννοια των σκιών με δύο κυρίως τρόπους: την εξερεύνηση ιδιαίτερα λεπτών διαβαθμίσεων και αποχρώσεων του ήχου και την αντανάκλαση και διάθλαση του ίδιου μουσικού αντικειμένου σε διαρκώς μεταλασσόμενα περιβάλλοντα.

Το έργο “Σκιαγραφίες ΙV” προσθέτει μια ψυχολογική διάσταση στην έννοια των σκιών. Αφορμή για τη σύλληψη του έργου ήταν μια ρήση του Οδυσσέα στον “Αίαντα” του Σοφοκλή: “βλέπω ότι οι ζωντανοί δεν είμαστε τίποτα άλλο από φαντάσματα, κούφιες σκιές.”  Στις “Σκιαγραφίες  ΙV” ένα απόκοσμο, επαναλαμβανόμενο ηχητικό σήμα γίνεται ο συνδετικός κρίκος γύρω από τον οποίο αναπτύσσονται συνειρμικά εικόνες από υποσυνείδητες μνήμες.
